Mi Primer Bitcoin launches app-agnostic Bitcoin Intro Course

SAN SALVADOR, December 10, 2024 Mi Primer Bitcoin, a bitcoin education non-profit rooted in El Salvador, has announced a new tool for bitcoin educators: the app-agnostic Bitcoin Intro Course. After creating the Bitcoin Diploma in 2023 and 2024, it now adds another product to its suite of educational resources, as it pushes for global, independent, impartial, and community-led bitcoin-only education.

Mi Primer Bitcoin, also known as My First Bitcoin, started in 2021 with bitcoin classes in El Salvador after the Bitcoin Law went into effect. In June 2022, it kicked off the first 10-week Bitcoin Diploma with 38 public school students in El Salvador. This Diploma workbook consists of 10 chapters and almost 180 pages.

The newly launched Bitcoin Intro Course is a response to market demand for a first basic introduction to Bitcoin and the request from students to have a course with a “shorter” duration than the Bitcoin Diploma.

Open Source Bitcoin Intro Course

The Bitcoin Intro Course is designed for a one-hour session, and it introduces students to the fundamentals of Bitcoin and why it’s become such a powerful force in today’s world. It covers the basics of how Bitcoin works, its origins, and its purpose, with a brief look at how people use it globally.

This interactive session is divided into two parts:

  1. Fundamentals of Money and Bitcoin’s History: It discusses what makes “good money,” how digital currencies evolved, and what Bitcoin offers as a solution to modern financial challenges.
  2. Hands-On Activity: Students get to try peer-to-peer Bitcoin transactions, using Bitcoin’s Lightning Network to experience its speed and simplicity firsthand.

Tailored versions, translations
The PPT-file can be downloaded from GitHub in various versions, both in terms of languages and with different software tools.

For now, it’s available in Spanish, English, and Dutch, and the powerpoint file is an easily-editable format for those that want to contribute. The Introductory Course explains how to use Lightsats, Blink and Wallet of Satoshi, which makes it app-agnostic!

MyFirstBitcoin always remains impartial and independent, and it doesn’t push nor promote specific products in its classrooms. Creating several versions of the same Bitcoin Intro Course is a testament to that mission, as all versions can be tailored to local needs and available/preferred wallets.

Additionally, the non-profit also created a Guide for teachers that plan to teach this introductory course for the first time. It encourages every Bitcoiner to join the movement with more translations, and/or more wallets, for better community-led learning experiences.

My First Bitcoin also launched its self-governing ‘Node Network’ of front-line Bitcoin educators in March 2023, which currently exceeds 55 educational projects from more than 30 countries. Since everything My First Bitcoin creates is open-source, many more around the world are teaching the workbook on their own initiative.

The new Introductory Course is a great tool or “funnel” for all these project to spark interest of the participants, to taste what they can learn with the Bitcoin Diploma.
Quentin Ehrenmann, General Manager of Mi Primer Bitcoin, explains:

“At Mi Primer Bitcoin we believe that education should be impartial and about empowerment. This is why instead of choosing one particular tool to onboard students onto Bitcoin, we decided to make it app-agnostic. We built it in a way that educators can easily adapt the course with the tool or wallet of their choice. As always, our first priority is the community.”
